Team America Model Rocketry Club

by Sam
(Fairfax County, VA)

Team America Model Rocketry Club is an after school club offered to students with interest in rocketry. Students participating begin the year by making a small model rocket, learn the basics of rocketry throughout the year, and prepare for the Team America Rocketry Challenge.

To interest the students in rocketry, the club kicks off with a small rocket launch in the beginning of the year, where students choose a partner and build a small model rocket with guidelines from the rocketry teacher who comes to teach the students after school. Learning perfect precision during the composition of these rockets is both interesting and fun.

Throughout the year, a teacher from the National Association of Rocketry comes after school to teach the students about rocketry. Students learn the proper components of building rockets, the parts of a rocket, and some aerodynamics of a rocket. In attempting to make the rocket, students receive step by step instruction from the teacher. Also, sample rockets from previous years are shown for the students to get an idea of what they are attempting to make.

The teachings provided ultimately prepare the students for the ultimate challenge: the Team America Rocketry Challenge, where students compete with other students nationwide. Each school is allowed about four teams consisting of about ten students, who attempt to make a perfect rocket (about 20 inches) that will be able to fly at least 800 feet, and have a descent rate of at least 30 seconds. The challenge occupies students with great interest, and let's them learn a lot about rocketry. A qualification flight for the competition is held in early April, where students qualify for entering the contest with a $60,000 grand prize.

Rocketry club is a very fun club that teaches students about rocketry. It has a very interesting whole-year program, which students thoroughly enjoy. The thrill of entering a nationwide competition is very exciting and the teacher's guidance throughout is fantastic. All students attending the club have fun and learn.
