The Exxon-Mobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp is a free program for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This is a two week sleepaway camp hosted at about 30 camp sites around the USA, including three universities in or around Virginia. The camp site I went to was at the University of Virginia.
During the stay, I was allowed to explore the campus; it was a great experience to be there. Many of the activities are related to science, math, and engineering. I participated in different experiments such as making a gooey substance out of water and different chemicals. Another experiment involved burning a marshmallow to find out how many calories were in it. A lot of the time was spent with building things like a solar-powered car and using computer programming software to program the car.
Not all of the activities were academic either. At times we were allowed to go to the gym and on the track for exercise. We even went on field trips to museums, putt putt golf, bowling, and D.C. There was almost always a special event each day.
This camp was an interesting and enjoyable experience for me, and taught me things about science and technology that I didn't know before. These aren't classes that make you bored, but activities that make you want to learn!
