Preliminary Analysis of Dalby’s TJ Prep for class of 2015
At a glance: 25/87 (29%) of all our students made the 2nd cut. Of the students who took our six-session class 18/76 (24%) were granted admissions.
Factoids: the statistics below refer to students who took Dalby's six-lesson, six practice test preparation.
ALGEBRA VERSUS GEOMETRY Of the 33 students who made the first cut but not the second, 17 took algebra in 8th grade and 16 took geometry.
For the algebra students The average math score before the six-session class was 26.8 (range 20-38) The average math score after the six-session class was 40.6 (range 32-50)
For the geometry students The average math score before the six-session class was 36.9 (range 20-44) The average math score after the six-session class was 43.7 (range 39-49)
Of the 19 students who made the second cut, six took algebra in 8th grade and 13 took geometry.
For the algebra students The average math score before the six-session class was 36.8 (range 24-44) The average math score after the six-session class was 44.4 (range 40-48)
For the geometry students The average math score before the six-session class was 39.3 (range 32-46) The average math score after the six-session class was 47.6 (range 45-50)
Of 76 class students (ten classes limited to eight students), 52 made the first cut. Of those 52, 18 made the second cut. Additionally, seven other students who either had one-on-one prep, took our 7th grade modules, and/or took our essay class also were granted admissions.
The beginning average score of students not making the first cut was 25.6 (range 13-35) the ending math was 32.8 (range 25-46; does not include all ending scores due to client non-response to survey).
How Much Preparation is Enough?
In a survey of 71 of my class students 31 claimed to have done no other preparation. Of those 31, nine were granted admissions (average beginning math 39/50; range 32-45/average ending math 47.25/50; range 46-50). 32 had taken another course before taking our class (Math Counts was included as a course) and seven were granted admissions (average beginning math before our course but after other preparation 37.57/50; range 24-46/average ending math 46.29/50; range 40-50).
What should we conclude? I’m not really sure. Clearly the group that had not done prep before and made it in were already scoring decently on the math part of the test. Presumably our class helped them make their average eight-point math gain.
My next step is to survey my students who took another prep class to see if their answers can shed more light on the subject.
