Michael Wu is a senior at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. An advanced math student, he studied BC Calculus in the Fall '09 and can tutor math up to that level: he has always earned high A’s in school. Fluent in Chinese, he can also help students that understand Chinese better than English. He has experience as a tutor starting In 8th grade, as a member of the National Junior Honor Society tutoring geometry and algebra students after school at Rachel Carson Middle School.
Here are comments from one of his happy students.
“Michael is an all around fun person who I have known since 3rd grade. As a tutor, he is patient and knowledgeable. He never gets upset if I do not understand something the first time and is always very encouraging. His logical style of tutoring helps me understand and remember important math concepts with ease. When Michael tutors me, instead of simply memorizing complex formulas, I am actually learning the material and how many of those formulas work. I know how frustrating it is not to understand something, and Michael helps me to get over my frustration and to comprehend the material much better than before.”
Seth Pacheco, rising junior, Oakton HS
Here are Michael's reflections on teaching:
"I personally enjoy tutoring because seeing someone’s eyes sparkle with understanding after grasping a concept is a priceless feeling. Knowledge is not nearly as powerful if one cannot successfully share it with others. "
Michael is available this summer to tutor middle school and high school subjects including (but not limited to) geometry, algebra I and algebra II.
