This is alway a scary time of year for us: test result time. We are probably the only people who care about our students' scores as much as their family's care. So we've tracked down our
TJ test prep class
and tutoring students and have analyzed the results.
There were some disappointments (the kids who worked so hard and didn't score their best on the real test), and some surprises (the student who started off with one of the lowest diagnostic test scores and scored the highest of the class students AND made the second cut).
But all in all there weren't too many surprises. Students with algebra under their belts and half way through
geometry
fared better as a group on the multiple choice admissions test, but of our students who made the second cut nearly half were taking algebra I in 8th grade.
Highly motivated, mature, and independent students fared better - the disinterested students or those with weaker beginning scores did not fare as well. (Of course, these are generalities). Still, all in all, we are quite proud of our students efforts and we think they all walked away with a better understanding of standardized tests and what needs to be done to score well.
In contrast, according to one of my students, of the 3,119 students who applied 1,553 (50%) were accepted into the semifinalist pool and 480 (15%) were actually granted final admission into TJHSST. Dalby's preparation definitely improves your odds.
BUT WAIT A MINUTE - maybe those students would have gotten in anyway! Well, not according to their
beginning diagnostic test scores
versus their ending scores. Thirty-three of our students gave us their exact TJ scores broken down by math and verbal.
Decide for yourself whether our prep makes a positive difference.

What about Cost?
I've had a few people mention that some local franchises have been giving them rather high cost estimates to improve test taken skills for TJ. Frankly, if you have to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to help your child be competitive perhaps you should rethink the whole process. It should not take 200 hours of instruction to prepare a qualified student! Below I have listed the cost at Dalby for the students who were accepted.
What was the cost to the students who made the first cut? 1) Class* only .....$590 2) Class + two January refresher classes ..... $790 3) Class + two January refresher classes + four hrs tutoring for PSAT $1,230 4) Class only.....$590 5) Class only.....$590 6) Class + two extra tests in January.....$640 7) Class + one extra January class.....$690 8) Class plus four hours of tutoring....$1,040 9) Class plus 2 extra essay classes.....$827 10)Class only.....$590 11)Class + one extra January class.....$690 12)Five-week essay/five-week verbal modules for 7th grader.....$870 13)Diagnostic + two hours essay tutoring and exam review........$330 14) January classes and practice tests.....$300
*Class was six instructional sessions and six practice tests with essays Range of costs= $300 to $1,230 Mode=$590
